sourcing map

ephorie provides a nice sourcing map. The explanations are in German, the intentions are to provide some structure in the ever growing jungle surounding the term sourcing

Linux virus writing article by foobar

As Uwe reminded me yesterday, that I haven’t posted for a long time, lets start briefly about some thoughts from foobar about writing a Linux virus. It’s not always kernel hacking :-)

free powerdown script

Lisa Nelson from the University of Liverpool provides a script to shutdown idling PC’s called powerdown. It uses two sysinternals tools to achieve this task. I think a good and easy way for oraganizations and private persons to reduce the energy bill. at least worth a try.

Isn’t that funny

Understanding Individual Human Mobility Patterns

Barabasilab offers a couple of reserach papers about analyzing complex networks. One recent with the above title uses (anonymous) communication data collected about a years period. A similar approach is taken by the senseable lab of MIT. Even I support and like to read those research, I wonder when equal tools are applied to data with links back to the actual persons data. There exist similar for fun projects for money. wheresisgeorge is a US$$ tracker and provides a list of links to other currency trackers

advances in science

TUM (technical university munich) created a system to detect toxic elements induced into rivers. It uses biosensors from Cellasys and for instant notification a mobile handset is used.
Researchers of the Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme (ISE) set a new record in electrical efficiency (6.7 %) for Solar energy generation using fluorescence collectors. They use coloured platters to redirect light to solarcells sitting at the border. another step to outside surfaces being used more efficient.
And Osram announced a new record in luminance and eeficency with white LED’s. in standard environment, they achieved with 350 Milliampere (mA) 136 Lumen per Watt (lm/W). These are the results of combining recent advances of the material and technlogy departments. 500 Lumen is the outcome when using 1.4 ampere. This could be a solution for streetlights, as a recent study of TU Darmstadt revealed that it costs about 760 Miollion Euro each year. And by switching to LED technology we could save about 400 Million Euro, not to mention the savings of 1.6 Million tons of CO2.

SAP to reduce R&D budget

The SW behemoth wants to reduce it’s development cost. according to an interview in financial time (de), the goal is 12% of the sales volume. Mr Kagermann mentions that the current R&D budget of 14% would be to much especially compard against competition. He adds, that this isn’t a move to further outsource R&D. reminds me at mid 90’s when DEC had about 27% R&D cost, and compared it against other having about 10%. At DEC, this started a new round of budget wars, and reductions of a couple of good projects. I hope that SAP doesn’t follow this path, as in todays market it’s really hard to differentiate yourself against others, and which department would be better qualified as think tank. But maybe it’s just the first pavement of Mr Apothekers road to leading the company. He’s the first coming with a sales background. Until today all had some engineer related education….

Update
theregister reports that the UK SAP User group foments revolt over massive price hike.

Where the hell is Matt

.

just wanted to share, as it made me feel good while listening and watching it. and of course I liked that he also visited cologne (3:37).

back again

It’s been quite a while since my last post. shame on me. Reasons are of course daily work, but this isn’t a real excuse. If you read the GTD and other agile rules not having a couple of minutes for a task really turns yourself in a weak position. But I don’t want to explain teh reasons now. First look back.
Devhouse was really nice, espiecial as there were plenty of possibilities for having a chat with others, especially with a couple of Kölsch at the nightly barbecue. I also visited the second day of the barcamp cologne, some JUG cologne meetings/presentations and also 2 web monday’s and also wothwhile to mention Froscon.

devhouse cologne

devhouse colognefinally, a friend lend me his old laptop so I just needed to excgange the disk . but the internal wlan card didn’t work. Lucky me, another friend offered me to take his pcmcia card, so I’m now kinda prepared to attend the devhouse cologne event. What’s this? take a look by yourself. A couple of people I met at the last barcamp/plogbar event(s) are attending, it seems to be a bit more technical directed than the last barcamp, but anyway, I expect fun, getting in contact with nice people, a various information exchanges. It’s amazing getting in touch with recent achievements made in differet technical fields. And on top of this, a warmup on Friday at “Gottes Grüne Wiese” and if weather is fine BBQ on Saturday eve. Sounds cool. More about it to come.
