Claremont Report summarizes DB Research activities

This report> is a nice read about current research activities in the DB space. Companies like Greenplum and Aster Data have recently integrated mapreduce in memory. Aster Data report in their blog and in white papers about how they’ve implemented the functionality, with an enterprise customer as target in contrary to hadoop and googles mapreduce , which they see more being used by engineers.

storage

The Register just posted an article about storage vendors claiming as usual the best storage array’s for Oracle DB. They actually made a failure by linking to Pillar instead of pillardata. I looked recently at Pillardata, they were founded with Lary Ellison backing them. Nevertheless they promise very good utilisation values and builtin QOS via the Axiom box. They use SATA drives and the performnace numbers they mention look quit well. recently they also introduced a smaller axiom box (300) for SME market. I don’t have actual price information, but I like the concept of higher utilisation. another box to look at is Atrato’s Velocity 1000. EMC’s DMX-4 is definitly in a different pricerange. They provide whitepapers with excellent numbers, but I remember that storagemojo explained the SSD products they actually use in more detail. He’s actually one of the consultants who talks about the numbers and offers (updated) pricelists. I follow his blog frequently

infobright open sources ICE (DWH)

Infobright released it’s ICE software. They also announced plans with jaspersoft for a software bundle.. The blog mentions other free candidates like monetDB. It will be interesting to see how Businessobjects (SAP), Cognos (IBM) and Oracle respond to this. Until now a thought that Greenplum and netezza will force them to react, but the market seems to be quicker (or not)…
